The Breast Cancer 3 Day - One Husbands Story

This comes from Robin's blog; Walkers 4 Life

I asked my husband what his thoughts of me crewing and walking in 3 Day are I asked him to just write a little something and here is his response.

Where do I start?
When I found out my Wife was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, it hit me hard. This was not possible. She was too young (only 35), it does not run in her family, she takes care of herself, this happens to others. Instead of just crying about it and praying for it to go away, my Wife Robin took the reins and decided that she was going to understand this dreaded disease. She hit the Internet, book stores and every resource she could find to understand what cancer she has and what are the available treatments. This armed us with the appropriate knowledge to ensure that she would have the right amount of treatment and understand what she was going to experience in the upcoming months.

My Wife was very strong during her surgeries, treatments and recovery.  That was 6 years ago and I am very happy and ecstatic to say she is still cancer free!!!

After all of that, it would have been real easy to just get back to the "normal" life and be glad to never hear that terrible word "Cancer" again but Robin couldn't do that. How can she make sure others are aware of early detection?  If it wasn't for others telling her about self exams, she potentially would not be with us today.  How can she spread the word and tell others to detect this awful disease early? How can she raise funds to help put an end to this disease and ensure that our 7 year old daughter does not have to go through what she did?

Even during treatments, she signed up for the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure. How could we not wake up early on a Sunday morning and go out to support her and others?  Small price to pay. Robin signed up and walked a 2 day breast cancer walk less than a year after finishing her treatment, but something about the 3 Day walk got her really excited.

She is training for her third 3 Day walk and it is a family event. We all assist her with fund raising and every opportunity I get, I am out there as the water boy and helping Robin and her friends get trained for the big walk.  The 3 Day Walk is a big event for our family. Even our two shy teenage sons are out there helping and cheering on walkers. Our 7 year old Daughter is totally into it. She gets dressed up in all pink and makes signs to cheer on the walkers. She gives out candy and waves her pom-poms to keep the walkers walking. I ensure you I do not have pink in my normal wardrobe but there is nothing wrong with putting on pink T-shirts and pink scarfs to get the walkers smiling and forgetting about their sore feet and legs. It is a challenge to get everyone into the car over and over again to keep leapfrogg'ing around the course to keep cheering on the walkers but it is so worth it. The energy and electricity in the air during these three days is so amazing. All of the decorated vehicles and the turnout of people is so inspirational for these great walkers. If even just one person who drives by these walkers ends up detecting an early stage of Breast Cancer by all of this awareness, it is so worth it. This is not to mention the amazing $11M raised by the San Diego walk last year that goes towards research, treatment and awareness.

How can I not support this??  If my prayers come true, hopefully my 7 year old Daughter will never have to go through what my Wife had to and the only memory of this disease and the 3 Day Walk will be in our photo albums.
